Summer in the Palouse

11 x 16", Oils on Canvas
$195.00

I painted this after a road trip through the Palouse in the summer of 2018. For those of you that don't know, the Palouse area of Washington State is a gorgeous area with hills that look almost like sand dunes. The reason for the dune-effect is because when the Great Floods came through the area 15,000 years ago, they dumped tons of glacial silt called "Loess" which, over several thousand years, blew into the crazy sand-dune shapes. When settlers came to the area, they found the hills were great for growing crops, and the whole place became a wheat-growing region. In the spring, the hills are bright green, but in the early summer there are swathes of golden wheat striped with wheat that's still ripenin.

I used a couple of phtographs that I took to paint this. The barn originally was grey, but there are so many red barns in the area, I decided to make mine red instead, to contrast with the green.
